AFA Decaux has actively worked for many years to minimize the carbon footprint throughout the organization and is now a climate-neutral media company. This is partly achieved through the carbon offsetting of the CO2 emissions that we cannot reduce ourselves. AFA Decaux already uses 100% green energy from Ørsted, provides urban services with electric vehicles and scooters, cleans urban equipment with filtered water, and operates with a minimum waste policy.

Furthermore, we continue to regularly reduce our carbon footprint and evaluate our partners and suppliers for the least possible climate impact.

ClimatePartner has calculated AFA Decaux's corporate carbon footprint for the entire year 2021, and for comparison, this showed that we had a climate footprint of nearly 700,000 kg of CO2, equivalent to the annual footprint of 79 Europeans.

What we do not compensate for includes the advertiser's product and the carbon footprint of the production of marketing campaigns (i.e., the footprint associated with the development of the advertisements themselves) before the creative or poster lands with us, as we do not have control over the effects of activities such as campaign development, product sales, or services.

ClimatePartner

ClimatePartner is internationally recognized as experts in climate protection and sustainability, specializing in calculating and reducing carbon emissions.

ClimatePartner invests in and develops high-quality carbon offset projects worldwide. They offer a wide portfolio of approximately 400 projects certified according to reliable standards such as the Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS).

The Gold Standard sets high standards for the overall environmental and social impact of projects, with support from various environmental organizations such as WWF.

The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) program is the world's most widely used greenhouse gas crediting program.

Projects are verified at various stages by both independent auditing bodies and carbon standards. Additionally, ClimatePartner conducts its comprehensive Due Diligence screening of projects, ensuring proper documentation and implementation.

After verified emissions reductions have been used to offset emissions, they are retired in the respective registry (e.g., Gold Standard) to prevent double-counting. ClimatePartner's offset process is continually reviewed by TÜV Austria.

Both direct and indirect carbon footprints are included in the calculations made by ClimatePartner based on collected data, including the number of posters, packaging, electricity consumption, transportation from the printing press to locations, poster changes, and cleaning of urban equipment, depots, and the company's footprint related to business travel, office supplies, recycling, and more. The calculations are done in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol).

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is the most established standard for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas emissions.

You can find more information below about the annual carbon footprint that we offset at the product level.

AFA Decaux has chosen to offset carbon emissions by supporting two projects verified under the Gold Standard and VCS (Verified Carbon Standard).

Forest protection in Indonesia

Forest protection projects ensure the long-term preservation of forests and place a higher value on forest conservation than deforestation. Rimba Raya is the world's largest initiative to protect and preserve peat swamp forests, one of the most threatened ecosystems globally. Its aim is to protect endangered species by conserving nearly 65,000 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 4.5 million tons per year.

The Rimba Raya project is one of the few initiatives that contributes to all 17 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and has an impact that extends far beyond carbon reductions. It contributes to clean water, increased educational opportunities, and sustainable economic growth in local communities, among other benefits.

Vindenergi i Chile

Wind energy in Chile

By investing in wind energy in Ovalle, AFA Decaux is contributing to the delivery of green electricity to the central grid in Chile. The wind turbines produce an average of 290 GWh of clean electricity per year and save just under 200,000 tons of CO2 annually.

This investment also plays a significant role in Chile's energy transition by expanding the renewable energy sector. It not only reduces carbon emissions but also supports the country's efforts to diversify its energy sources and promote sustainability.
