Street furniture in elegant design line

We have created an entirely new urban space in Frederiksberg, where nature has been integrated directly into the street furniture, linking quality and functionality with aesthetics and design in a unified design family.

Every square metre counts in Frederiksberg, so we have used the opportunity to create more urban nature with green roofs for the benefit of both people and the environment. At the same time, it supports the municipality’s climate vision of more urban nature and increased biodiversity.

  • Bus shelters
  • Waste bins
  • Public toilets
  • Information and welcome totems
  • Defibrillators (AEDs)
  • Digital screens
  • Smart City sensors for real-time data collection to measure air quality and mobility

In addition to supplying and installing the equipment, we also handle operation and maintenance, which are carried out by our own cleaning staff and service technicians. We use 100% green electricity and service the street furniture with electric cars and scooters. The cleaning staff clean the street furniture using filtered water and operate with a minimum-waste policy.

Some of the bus shelters include advertising panels, which we sell to media agencies and direct advertisers. In this way, we finance the street furniture for the municipality, which can instead allocate funds and resources to other important areas of focus.

The architects’ thinking behind the design

Our partners at Holscher Design are recognised for their strategic approach to good design, and they have created a design line with strong recognisability and great respect for Frederiksberg’s distinct character. The new design line ties all elements together in a visually strong and coherent design family that unites functional, aesthetic and environmental requirements.

The bus shelters offer a sense of elegance and exclusivity through the fine quality materials used in the design. Every detail has been carefully considered, while sustainability, durability and recyclability have also been built into the solution.

The equipment is made from materials such as steel, aluminium, toughened glass and noble wood, ensuring a lifespan of 30 years and a beautiful patina over time. The dominant colour is the deep, dark Frederiksberg green, which matches the surrounding urban environment and highlights both the wood and the tombac used in the fittings and the city crest. The proportions, colours, materials and details all contribute to a calm and harmonious expression in the cityscape.

The complete design line represents Frederiksberg as a modern knowledge city with high ambitions for the future – while each element also enters into a gentle dialogue with the city’s beautiful historic buildings. A functional, contemporary and aesthetic system of street furniture that frames everyday life for citizens and welcomes everyone – regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or disability.

For many years Frederiksberg has distinguished itself with a deliberate architectural policy that has resulted in the municipality’s high architectural and urban quality. The many green areas in the city have made Frederiksberg one of the most attractive and desirable residential areas in the country. The intention with the street furniture has been to capture and reinforce these qualities.

Planting and biodiversity

As part of the municipality’s climate adaptation efforts, the planting on the roofs of the street furniture is intended to support biodiversity and optimise conditions for the insects, animals and plants that already exist in Frederiksberg’s urban nature.

This is an innovative and experimental project that will hopefully bring many positive effects. The initiatives are also meant to raise awareness of and learning about biodiversity and to act as small stepping stones for common species in the surrounding urban nature – and, overall, to make more room for a wilder nature in the city. The green roofs also help improve cloudburst protection by absorbing, evaporating and delaying rainwater.

By representing different nature zones with variety and diverse structures, the solutions benefit as many plants, insects and arachnids as possible – strengthening urban nature in the long term. At the same time, residents have something green and lush to look at, which will undoubtedly help enhance their everyday life.

For these species to thrive, whether in nature or on a biotope roof, a number of elements must be present:

  • Food source
  • Heat source
  • Habitat
  • Interaction with other species

The solutions ensure these fundamental elements, while also ensuring that the greenery has a variation and structure that benefits as many organisms in the city as possible.

Nature zones and habitats

In collaboration with biodiversity experts, we have identified four nature zones that reflect the specific character of nature in Frederiksberg and its different habitats. Each nature zone is represented in its own way on the roofs of the bus shelters and toilets, and the planting and elements have been carefully selected to match the urban nature and contribute positively to biodiversity.

1. THE GRASSLAND
Well-drained soil in open, sunny locations with a very warm microclimate that requires full sun. The vegetation consists of hardy herbs and tuft-forming grasses.

2. THE MEADOW
Light-demanding, low-growing and moisture-dependent plants that thrive in an environment with space for collected rainwater in small depressions. The small puddles benefit insects and birds.

3. THE RAILWAY HABITAT
Plants that can tolerate extreme conditions and a lot of sun. The environment is warm and dry and attracts heat-loving insects and plants.

4. THE FOREST FLOOR
A shady, moist and cool environment where leaves from the trees accumulate. Nutrient-demanding and shade-tolerant herbs and perennials grow here, rich in fertilising agents and organic material.

Official opening

On a cold December morning in 2024, the Mayor of Frederiksberg Municipality, Michael Vindfeldt, cut the silk ribbon at the bus shelter in front of the town hall at the official inauguration of the municipality’s new street furniture. On this occasion, the Mayor and representatives from the municipal Department of City and Environment were presented with the Frederiksberg statuette – a miniature version of the street furniture created in the same design and materials.

FACTS ABOUT FREDERIKSBERG MUNICIPALITY

Frederiksberg Municipality is the 7th largest municipality in Denmark, with a population density of 12,000 inhabitants per km². By comparison, the City of Copenhagen ranks 2nd with 7,000 inhabitants per km². In addition, there is a high level of daily commuting into the municipality from surrounding areas, which further increases the number of people reached by campaigns – both analogue and digital.

Frederiksberg is one of the most important locations for our advertisers. Around 2% of the entire Danish population lives here within a relatively limited area, with the majority belonging to a high-income, high-purchasing-power segment, making them highly attractive to target in campaign contexts.

Frederiksberg also contains large green areas such as Søndermarken and Frederiksberg Gardens, as well as a number of educational institutions, including Copenhagen Business School (CBS), TEC, the University of Copenhagen and the Royal Danish Academy of Music. The municipality also offers a rich and diverse cultural life with venues such as Aveny-T, Riddersalen, Betty Nansen Teatret, Cisternerne, Forum and KU.BE.
